Family Reserve No. 46 Years
Padrón
By Benjamin Charles Brown
Classic Padrón Family Reserve excellence with a creamier, more caramel-forward profile than other FR blends: coffee-liqueur first third, toasted nuts midsection, butterscotch finish. 90/100. One mid-smoke draw hiccup, quickly fixed with a Perfect Draw tool, was the only surprise.
In the Cigar DatabaseTasting progression
First third
No bitter notes. Classic Nicaraguan peppery profile, smooth with no bite on the retrohale: caramel, dark roast espresso, and dark chocolate. Immediate medium strength. Flavours integrate into a creaminess under the pepper, a coffee liqueur taste comparable to Baileys.
Second third
More toasted nut from the wrapper: peanut butter, roasted hazelnut, and macadamia. More savory than other Padróns, with salted caramel / butterscotch character without overt sweetness. Pepper softens considerably into greater creaminess. Brief draw tightness and extinguish at the end of the third; after relight and Perfect Draw surgery, profile keeps blending with consistent, less peppery fullness and even greater punch on the retrohale.
Final third
Flavours keep developing and blending. Pepper now very faint; retrohale smoother and less stringing. Butterscotch leads, still chocolatey with espresso underneath, creamier and more caramel than other Family Reserve blends, starting savory and evolving sweeter.
Final Verdict
90/100. As always with Padrón, and especially Family Reserve, it does not disappoint. The only surprise was mid-smoke draw trouble, quickly fixed with Perfect Draw surgery. Creamier and more caramel than other FR blends, savory opening into evolving sweetness; the cigar became better and better through the close.
